Hudson to manage builds and extrenal processes.

Recently I started looking at Hudson to automate our builds, tests and automatic provisioning of environments. I have been using Continuum from the past few years and been pretty happy with it for the most part. Recently we have expanded our automated tests and provisioning middleware infrastructure onto different platforms including zLinux and AIX. Unfortunately there is no Continuum wrap available for these new platforms which made me look for alternatives and I stumbled upon Hudson.

What is Hudson?

Check Hudson’s wiki for complete description of Hudson and what it can do for you. If you are a Continuum or Cruise Control user check this to get a good understanding of how Hudson differs from these continous integration tools.

Why I like it?

Ease of use and setup – It took me less than 15 minutes to setup my first build.

Multi platform support – Was able to start using it on Linux, Solaris, zLinux and AIX platforms.

Parallel Builds – Was able to kick off parallel builds (Continuum does not support it yet)

Monitor any process – I am able to monitor other long running processes from within Hudson

Other Features I am interested in

Distributed Builds – This is something I will be trying out in the next few weeks. I am hoping to distribute the provisioning to different platforms with this feature.

3rd Party Plugins – There are many number of interesting plugins available and will be integrating with a few.

Overall I am pretty impressed and looking forward to use this nifty tool and blog about it.
